The practice of Eskrima unusually involves learning to use and defend against weapons including sticks (and knives for the adults) from early on - which makes it especially attractive and confidence boosting in the current climate. However we do not focus on the potential harm that can be done but rather (as all Martial Arts should) on the development of the individual, the beauty and form of the Art, the confidence it can inspire in those that practice it, the fitness benefits and the fun in learning. I also like to encourage an understanding of the culture and history (my teacher is a Filipino Eskrima Master) as well as its ability to inspire a peaceful resolution to any situation (whether through an increased ability to be aware of and avoid any confrontation) or by the confidence that an experienced student of Martial Arts can project.

The club doesn’t generally advertise for students (this article is the first time I have ‘promoted’ the club since it opened!) and motivated by my desire to share information on this little known Martial Art - we have a slow turnover of attendees with many senior students having attended since the club started in 2003 . I believe that by keeping away from commercialism (it’s a hobby not a money making venture) the Art is preserved correctly. That is not to say that we are not growing - the particular style of Eskrima we teach (the Dacayana System) now has clubs as far apart as Wales and Peterborough.

This year too I will be starting a childrens class that will be a mixture of some of the dynamic Eskrima training methods as well as include some of the discipline and structure of Jujutsu. I am fortunate in that I have long history in a variety of Martial Arts as well as some experienced Instructors to support me (which I’m sure I will need for the kids!!) Crucially we also have a child protection policy (through Sacred Spring) as well as Enhanced CRB checked Instructors. If you are a parent reading this and would like to get your kids enrolled or involved yourself I would love to hear from you.
I would also add that Eskrima is particularly suitable for women as it does not rely on size, strength or even the ability to punch!!

I hope this has been an interesting read! More information is available at www.malverneskrima.co.uk or directly from me 07940224451 if you would like to know more.
