History and Location

Malvern Wells Village Hall

Malvern Wells Village Hall lies in the centre of the village on the side of the Malvern Hills, at a height of 150 metres (nearly 500 feet) above sea level. The Hall is on the east side of the Wells Road (A449) and was built on the site of the old National Schoolroom on the strip of land between St Peter’s Churchyard and the main road. The Village Hall was built in 1898 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Victoria.Built of the highly fashionable pink/grey Malvern stone (which is no longer quarried) under a steeply pitched red tiled roof with yellow sandstone window mullions and door lintels, it must have been a strikingly colourful building when it was new. The Hall, or Church Institute, as it was called at the time, was given to the Parish of Malvern Wells by Mrs Hannah Finnie whose gift is commemorated on a wall plaque inside the main hall, where there is also a fine carved wooden War Memorial for the servicemen of the village who lost their lives in the two World Wars of the 20th Century.Memorials Village Hall

Interior

Inside the Village Hall there is a pleasantly decorated large main hall (holding up to a hundred people) with tall windows on both eastern and western sides. There is a traditional stage with full curtains at one end of the hall and a recently refurbished kitchen with all facilities, including a dishwasher, at the other. There are plentiful tables, upholstered stacking chairs, stage lighting and a sound system available. Upstairs at the northern end of the building there is a committee room that can seat twelve people. The Hall has a permanent ramp at the southern double doors for disabled access and disabled WC facilities on the entrance floor level.

Place in Village Life

The Village Hall is a well used and popular venue for plays (Malvern Wells Players), dancing, Tai Chi, physical fitness classes, WI meetings, Parish Council Meetings, public debates, numerous social occasions (including those run by the Malvern Wells Revellers) and private parties. There is also an After School Club for local schoolchildren run by Brighter Futures. The lower ground floor is home to The Wells Club, a licensed social club run by local residents.

Management

The Malvern Wells Village Hall is a Registered Charity and managed by the Malvern Wells Village Hall Board of Management. The Board is composed of representatives all the main local organisations which use the hall.
